What is VIA APSYRTIDES?
The marking of the island’s historical trails with a specially designed sign consisting of stylized letters V and A, which is an abbreviation for Via Apsyrtides, has begun. The Cres-Lošinj archipelago was called Apsyrtides in ancient times, so the name was chosen for the transversal that will stretch from the northernmost point of the island of Cres, Cape Jablanac, all the way to Cape Radovan, the southernmost point of the island of Ilovik. A 75 km long network of historical educational trails, developed and arranged by the City of Cres as part of the European VALUE project, is connected to this transversal.
This tourist product will connect the far north and south of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago, and offer visitors a handful of interesting information about the island’s heritage, history and biodiversity, thus laying the foundations for tourism development along the entire route, especially outside the summer season. The local service trade “Xplore Cres” has been hired for the marking job, which, in cooperation with authorized markers, marks the roads according to the standards of the Croatian Mountaineering Association.
What is FASTEST KNOW TIME?
A fastest known time (FKT) is the speed record for a running or hiking route. Unlike most endurance sports competitions such as marathon world records, FKTs are self-organized and done alone or in small groups. FKTs are most popular on long trails suitable for thru-hiking or ultramarathon trail running such as the Appalachian Trail, the Pennine Way, and the John Muir Trail.
FKT VIA APSYRTIDES PROJECT
What better way to officially open a new trail than to bring top ultra athletes and let their performance show what’s possible?! Gathering 20 elite runners, both men and women, from ten European countries to set the fastest known time of the Via Apsyrtides route is what this project is all about. The FKT will stand as a future measure for everyone who embarks on this adventure and will lure those who think they can do it faster and write their names down in the VA history.
On June 17th 2022., 20 invited men and women from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia will start their race over islands of Cres and Lošinj for the FKT of the new transversal Via Apsyrtides. The distance of the course is 140 kilometres with 4000 metres of elevation gain for which they’ll have 25 hours to comple
